Kids Corner - A Note from Kuerstin
This being our first issue, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Kuerstin Fordham-Macedo. I am the mom of a 6-year-old boy and twin 1-year-old girls. I am also a full time chiropractor in the Rochester area. I treat patients of all ages. I would like to use this newsletter as a tool to offer helpful advice to moms and dads and also as a resource in which questions can be answered. I will be presenting suggestions for common ailments in order to keep our kids comfortable during common illnesses, recipes to help with both comfort and prevention, and answering any questions that you may have. Any suggestions in this column are NOT intended to replace any advice given by your primary care physician or pediatrician but instead to be used in conjunction with that advice.
With school in full swing, the common cold (also known as an upper respiratory virus) will probably be visiting your house. There are about two hundred different viruses that result in a cold. The symptoms can be any or all of the following: nasal mucous discharge, blocked nasal passages, sore throat, cough, fever/chills/body aches, headache, irritability/fatigue, inccreased urination/diarrhea, swollen glands, and viral rash. See Symptoms Tab
Important Notes:
1) The fever can last up to 3 days and the nose and throat symptoms can last
7-10 days.
See Symptoms Tab for when to contact your pediatrician.
2) Do not over medicate with any chosen method of treatment, instead respect
the body's needs: plenty of rest and sleep, drink large amounts of fluid at room
temp. without a lot of acidity and sugar, low light, and keep warm.
3) Diet should be light. Soups are an excellent choice because they enhance fluid
and nutrient intake and help increase the elimination of waste. It is best to make
your own soup. See Recipe Tab for a great chicken stock to make ahead.
Foods to consider Foods to avoid
Soup Sugar/artificial ingredients/refined flours
Chicken Red meat
Cooked veggies Raw foods
Cooked apples Acidic veggies and fruits
Teas, room temp. water Cold foods and drinks
Suggestions:
1) In a warm mist vaporizer, add eucalyptus leaves, cloves, and pine needles for
lung congestion.
2) In a warm bath, add Epsom Salt to improve cirulation, open pores, increase
sweating and elimination and improve sleep.
3) See suggestion tab for more ways to keep your kids comfortable.
